In Tanzania, domestic food production is sufficient to meet national food needs. However, some of the regions suffer perennial food shortages due to inherent weaknesses, especially post-harvest systems, which contribute to higher food prices, as a result of decreased food supply to the market. Due to increasing magnitude of post-harvest losses, which is estimated to be 30 – 40% for cereals and even higher for perishable crops. As a response to this situation, the government in collaboration with other stakeholders developed the National Postharvest Management Strategy (NPHMS). NPHMS will be implemented over ten years period focusing on food crops particularly cereals, legumes, fruits and vegetables, roots and tubers and edible oil crops. The strategy intends to provide significant interventions that will reduce post-harvest losses and potentially offset this food deficit.
